5th Grade Envy

My photogenic eldest is in 5th grade.  I ain't no spring chicken, but for some reason I have very clear memories of 5th grade. My teacher, Mr Wilson, who didn't appreciate me for correcting his use of the word 'snuck' instead of 'sneaked' (though I think snuck is now an accepted word because everyone else thought like Mr Wilson as well)....there was the Christmas play where I played Mary though it wasn't the Mary you're thinking of...and the general feeling of coolness being one of the older kids in school.
Now that Isaac is in 5th grade I also have realized how much more fun it is to help him get his homework done.  (OK, 'fun' is pushing it. I'm not that lame. Let's just say 'more satisfying') Little kid homework is very tedious, especially after the first couple of kids---handwriting practice, letter sounds, math fact families.....boooring! But Isaac has brought home stuff this year that has tested me. I had to google an e-tutorial on partial quotient division because I'd never heard of it. You should have seen me hunkering down over the laptop trying to figure out what the cute tutor was talking about. But once I got it I felt awesome. Like I won a race or something. Now he gets to write a state report with an outline and notes and everything. 2-3 pages of fun! I'm so excited to start writing this. I mean, to have HIM write it, of course....I hope I get 100%!  I mean, I hope Isaac gets 100%....Dang. This really tells you a couple things about me. I either really need to go back to school (just 5th grade thanks, I'm not really into over exerting my brain by going back for a doctorate or anything). Or somebody needs to start rewarding my daily victories with letter grades and medals. Too bad for my girls that today's lunch is probably going to be in the C- range......

Do peanut butter crackers count as lunch? Adam thinks so and that's all that matters. I, however, am not enjoying fourth grade homework. A book report every month that I have to nag all month long for it to be done and then the last minute rush where I end up doing the hard part so that it will get done. Grrrr. This month it will be done early.

you're too funny! 5th grade was one of my best years...our teacher had us each pick a pioneer to research and then we got to go to Yosemite ALL dressed up and playing our parts - for an OVER NIGHTER!!!! Her name was Mrs. Love, wish S. could be in her class this year (but she's retired & in a diff. state). hope Isaac has lots of fun with his state report. have him pick AZ and we can help : )
maybe you should give Isaac a stockpile of gold stickers to put on a chart, when you figure out his homework. when you get 5 stars you get a trip to Hogi Yogi!?!?!? yes, there will always be a "teacher" inside of me!

Was that the same Mr. Wilson who was principal of the high school? I don't remember...but then again you went to a different school I guess, huh.

I remember doing Florida for my 5th grade report! 2 pages is long...you should see Anika write her stories for her homework- a paragraph, tops, when she's given a whole page to use.

I'm going to frame some of my (my kids') A plus work for the wall... right next to my (my boys') scouting awards :)

I hope Isaac is wearing that outfit tonight to the party.

I totally remember the sneaked story because then I was super smart for knowing that too. To this day people tell me sneaked is not a word.
We were cool in 5th grade. Was that the year we traded clothes?

I like your enthusiasm. I ask "did you bring your book" and when they say no I tell them they have to wait for Dad. He can do it without the instructions. If Dad's out of town then on math we can ask Trisa but it's a little hard now that she's out of town. I think I'll have them call you!
